How is this different from a Science Camp? This is a Hands-On experience where students work side-by-side with local scientists using modern, sophisticated instrumentation including Spectrophotometers and Chromatographs.  In addition, our program is specifically designed by educators to augment the New Jersey state core curriculum. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we reinforce the core subjects being taught in the classroom.

How is this different from a field trip to a lab? Most laboratories are off-limits to the general public because of the risks. Most laboratories contain dangerous chemicals, proprietary information, and important work in process. Our laboratory is safe, has no proprietary information, and provides carefully crafted activities where the students do the work. Using sophisticated laboratory instrumentation which is too expensive and too difficult to maintain in a normal school setting, our scientists guide the students and remove much of the intimidation many students feel when contemplating pursuing these fields of study.

What is the long term benefit? It is well documented that student proficiency and interest in STEM subjects drops dramatically after the 8th grade. By providing a focused, well studied approach to this professional hands-on learning experience, we increase the number of students who "fall in love" with this field and go on to become innovators. Society benefits from having a more educated populace. American business benefits from having a more educated and capable scientific and technological workforce.

Where do the instruments come from? Students 2 Science has worked hard to obtain instruments from major corporations including Dow Chemical, Perkin Elmer, Novartis, Teva, Roche, J&J, and many others.

Where do the instructors, assistants and mentors come from? One of our founders - Donald Truss, is a recruiter of scientists and is continually recruiting new volunteer scientists who are passionate about their careers and are eager to help young students get started.

Is financial assistance available for schools who can’t afford this? Yes, we have corporate sponsors who are willing to pay for certain schools to participate. (ask and we will work to identify an appropriate sponsor)

Where is the lab located? The S2S Technical Center is located at 66 Deforest Avenue in East Hanover, New Jersey, 07936.

What are the hours? Volunteers arrive by 8:15. Students arrive at 9:00am. The day ends at 2:30 when the students re-board their bus. Volunteers leave by 3:00.

Do you provide food? No, students must bring their own food and drink. Lunch is provided for our volunteers.

Is the lab dangerous? No. We have removed dangerous materials and we provide safety equipment to the students including gloves, goggles and lab coats.

What is the minimum and maximum number of students? We need a minimum of 20, and a maximum of 48 students per visit
