Who We Are and What We Do

Organization Background and Mission

Students 2 Science, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) model program in New Jersey that bridges the needs of the public and private sectors. Our mission is to inspire, motivate, and educate elementary, middle and high school students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM subjects). We do so by providing an authentic, state-of- the-art laboratory experience complete with modern instrumentation and professional scientists. Additionally, we offer remote, web-based virtual STEM experience that eliminates geographic and language constraints and broadens our reach to serve a wider audience. Teams of students, working collaboratively with scientific professionals who serve as role models, solve real life problems while being introduced to a wide variety of 21st century STEM career opportunities.

Since our founding in 2009, by a group of entrepreneurs whose goal was to inspire students to pursue STEM subjects, S2S has served over 62,000 students and used more than 2,000 scientific professionals as volunteer mentors and instructors, consistently achieving a success rate of greater-than- 25% measurable increase in the affinity for pursuing STEM subjects by participating students. Approximately 85% of the students served by S2S come from schools located in underserved school districts, formally known as New Jersey School Development Authority Districts (SDA).

Recent Accomplishments

In 2018, S2S opened the S2S Newark Technology Center – a 10,000 square ft. state-of-the-art facility valued at $4 million – in downtown Newark that is designed to engage Newark students in hands-on science learning. The center had its official opening ceremony on May 7, 2018, with U.S. Senator Cory Booker and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, our longtime champions and advocates, as featured guests.

The S2S Newark Technology Center, created through a formal, public-private partnership betweeen the Newark Public Schools, the city of Newark and S2S, is being heralded as a national model in authentic STEM education and urban community development. It reflects a growing interest among diverse stakeholders to respond to the disparities and inefficiencies in our education system; the challenges faced by school districts in providing real, relevant and rigorous STEM education; and to the demands of the 21st Century workforce.

“This tremendous educational opportunity for our children will put them on a path toward a brighter future and will help develop the workforce our employers are demanding.”

– Newark Mayor Ras Baraka

“Our students deserve every opportunity to excel in school, college, and in the career they choose – our partnership with Students 2 Science affords students the opportunity to match their classroom learning with hands-on learning taught by scientists. Side-by-side instruction from scientists with our students is priceless. Many thanks to S2S and all of the corporate partners who are providing our students with a remarkable foundation to excel in STEM fields.”
