The Problem We Are Addressing

Today’s global economy is highly dependent on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), with increasing demand for technically competent employees.   Unfortunately, the number of college degrees in STEM disciplines is decreasing in the United States. Only 5 percent of U.S. undergraduates today earn college degrees in science and engineering, compared to 42 percent in China.  Test scores for American students in STEM subjects drop rapidly after eighth grade and fall below the average of other industrialized nations (The National Math and Science Initiative, 2000).  This problem impacts poor and minority communities disproportionately. Coincidentally the demand for the STEM related workforce is increasing.


Why This Is Important

Scientific innovation has produced roughly half of all U.S. economic growth in the last 50 years (National Science Foundation 2004). According to The National Science Board, Science and Engineering Indicators 2008, growth in demand for technically competent employees is rising rapidly, while graduate degrees in the United States in science and engineering are declining. If this trend continues, citizens in the United States will fall behind other countries in their ability to understand these concepts and find work in these important fields. When compared to students internationally, U.S. students perform better than average, but significantly below students in several Asian and European countries. The average score for grade 8 students in 10 countries exceeded that of U.S. students on the 2007 TIMSS assessment for science (Martin, Mullis, and Foy, 2008).


Our Solution

In 2006, Paul Winslow, Ph.D. the co-founder of QTI, an independent contract analytical testing laboratory invited classes of students from a local middle school into his laboratory for one day field trips. QTI scientists developed four age-appropriate experiments and then worked side-by-side with the students as they conducted these hands-on experiments using sophisticated laboratory instrumentation. The program was very successful and has been replicated as The Students 2 Science ISAAC program. (Improving Student Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM). Students 2 Science, Inc., is a public charity operating a modern, sophisticated analytical chemistry laboratory for the sole purpose of providing young students with an authentic STEM related work experience. Students visit our commercial laboratory in East Hanover New Jersey where they conduct age-appropriate experiments using state-of-the art instrumentation while working side-by-side with local technical professionals. S2S programs generate excitement and instill confidence in the students for subjects which are traditionally viewed as difficult.
