The Career Advancement Mentorship Program offers postsecondary and career development support for 11th and 12th graders by connecting them with professionals from a broad range of STEM industries. We provide students from S2S’ partner schools/districts/programs with 2-1 mentoring for at least two years, with monthly guided conversations and quarterly community building activities. Mentees who participate in the program develop meaningful and professional relationships that expand their network and help build confidence in their postsecondary and career journeys.
Our Mentors Represent The Following STEM Industries:
- Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology
- Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology and Life Sciences
- STEM Education (Elementary, Middle & HS); Higher Education
- Allied Health/Healthcare (Physicians, Nursing, Medical Field)
- Alternate Energy

Mentors
- 25+ years old; professional with a career in STEM industries highlighted above (early- and mid-career professionals preferred).
- Live within the United States (tri-state, PA preferred).
- Demonstrate an interest in working with young people.
- Exhibit patience, empathy, positivity, and resourcefulness.
- Enjoy learning and be comfortable receiving and applying feedback from staff and mentees.
Mentees
- Be an 11th grade student at one of S2S’ partner high schools, districts, or programs.
- Commit to attending the required monthly 2:1 meetings, quarterly virtual relationship building workshops, and in-person events (in-person attendance not required for mentees outside of NJ).
- Express a personal interest in receiving mentorship from a STEM professional.
Responsibilities
Mentors
- Build supportive and caring mentoring relationship that centers your mentee through knowledge sharing, consistency and skill building opportunities.
- Support your mentee as they explore a heightened sense of self, build confidence in their passions and identities, and navigate relationships and stress.
Mentees
- Remain open minded, as honest as you feel comfortable, and dedicated to adding meaningful relationships to your network.
- Respond to all communication from staff – including completing surveys and check-ins.
Application Process
Mentors
- Submit an online application.
- Schedule and complete a virtual interview with program staff (a completed application does not guarantee a match).
- Complete a background check.
- Attend a virtual new volunteer orientation.
Mentees
- Submit an online application.
- Interview with program staff
- Please note that an interview does not guarantee you will be matched with a mentor. Formal acceptance into the program is at the discretion of the CAP team.
- Students from partner schools receive priority into the mentorship program.
Commitments
Mentors
- Commit for a minimum of 2 years.
- Maintain 75% attendance at quarterly workshops and in-person events (in-person attendance not required if you are a mentor outside of NJ.)
- Attend quarterly virtual community building workshops.
- Attend monthly virtual meetings with mentees, using Mentorship Program guidebook to support building healthy rapport.
Mentees
- Attend ALL monthly, one-hour sessions with assigned mentor.
- Attend quarterly virtual community building workshops.
